BEFORE YOU LEAP IN TO HELP
First Aid for Parents classes are suitable for parents, expectant parents and carers of babies and young children. They cover first aid techniques for babies (0-1 years) and children (1-12 years), such as for choking, basic life support and common first aid scenarios. The classes are run by First Aid trainer Kate Ellwood from Life First who teaches key principles that can be transferred into practice easily, should they ever be needed. The aim is to prepare you to act with confidence!
Classes are being offered in two formats: A 3-hour in-person class and a 2-hour online class.
After the class all participants receive a link via email to useful resources related to the subject and mentioned in class.
The sessions cover topics such as:
- How to manage a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing
- How to perform CPR on a baby or child who has stopped breathing
- How to respond when a baby or child is choking
- Bleeding
- Burns
About Kate
Before coming to Belgium, Kate Ellwood was a qualified nurse with 25 years practical experience and a Master of Studies in Primary and Community Care from Cambridge University. She completed the Rode Kruis Vlaanderen Brevet Eerste Hulp (Basiscursus) and Brevet Helper (Vervolgcursus) in March 2015, followed by a First Aid Instructors Course through Aid Training and Operations Ltd in the UK, where she now attends an annual update day.
She teaches in line with the requirements of the UK Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, with the content delivered in line with the latest Resuscitation Council (UK) Guidelines. This is backed up by her experiences working as a prenatal teacher (Diploma of Higher Education Antenatal Education).
