TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) machines can provide pain relief during labour. These small battery-operated devices deliver small electrical pulses to the body via electrodes placed on the skin (on the lower back) with sticky pads. TENS machines are thought to affect the way pain signals are sent to the brain and can be an effective way to manage labour pain, particularly during the early stages at home and in hospital.
The BCT has a number of TENS machines available for hire to members and it is best to rent one a couple of weeks before your due date to be prepared. The cost of rental is €20 for 6 weeks hire, plus €50 returnable deposit.
