BEFORE YOU LEAP IN TO HELP.
First Aid for Parents is a 2-hour online class suitable for parents, expectant parents and carers of babies and young children. It covers first aid techniques for babies (0-1 years) and children (1-12 years), such as for choking, basic life support and common first aid scenarios.
Since the "hands on" aspect is missing from an online first aid class, Kate Ellwood focusses on some key principles you can transfer into practice easily, should they ever be needed. The aim is to prepare you to act with confidence!
The BCT First Aid classes are open to BCT members and non-members alike and are led by the BCT’s first-aid trainer Kate Ellwood.
The session covers topics such as:
- How to manage a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing
- How to perform CPR on a baby or child who has stopped breathing
- How to respond when a baby or child is choking
- Febrile seizure
Before coming to Belgium, Kate Ellwood was a qualified nurse with 25 years practical experience and a Master of Studies in Primary and Community Care from Cambridge University. She completed the Rode Kruis Vlaanderen Brevet Eerste Hulp (Basiscursus) and Brevet Helper (Vervolgcursus) in March 2015, followed by a First Aid Instructors Course through Aid Training and Operations Ltd in the UK, where she now attends an annual update day.
She teaches in line with the requirements of the UK Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, with the content delivered in line with the latest Resuscitation Council (UK) Guidelines. This is backed up by her experiences working as a prenatal teacher (Diploma of Higher Education Antenatal Education).
First Aid Instructor Qualifications
- HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF)
- Automated Defibrillation Instructor
- First Aid Instructor and Assessor (Adult and Paediatric)
Kate Ellwood also offers our Hypnobirthing courses.
"Kate Elwood is the amazing professional who gives Adult, Babies and Children CPR and Chocking classes for BCT. Followed her class when my baby was 2 weeks old and had a refresher today with hubby and nanny after scary experience. Highly, highly recommended! And my now 1 year old couldn't let us practice on the dummies because she found them too cute to put them down!"
These online classes take place on Zoom.
